A Mecha Post

A month has flown by, and I'm genuinely bemused at my inability to have generated new posts, given how much painting I've been doing. But nothing has quite gelled into a finished model to show.

So here's a post with some book and manga suggestions for those readers who may be in need of some mecha reading.

Hardfought (1983) by Greg Bear
Cloned, energy-exosuited soldiers fight aliens, but human identity is the main casualty. On my to be read list.

Great Sky River (1987) by Gregory Benford
Post-apocalypse nomads in battlesuits fight to survive against alien robots. On my to be read list.

Rimrunners (1989) by C. J. Cherryh
After the Company War ends, a battlesuit trooper finds herself trapped, incognito, among civilians on the other side. One of my favourite books with power armour.

Warstrider Series (1994) by William H. Keith
Exotic aliens and “realistic” mecha that transform via nanotechnology. This is an early series from Keith after his BattleTech Gray Death series, which has a lot going on it that makes him one of my favourite authors.

The War for Eternity (1983) by Chris Rowley
Ursoid aliens and their human allies fight power-armored space marines. On my to be read list.

Legacy (1995) by Steve White
Human marines in well described powered armor fight to liberate an alien world. Recommended to me.

Appleseed  (Manga) by Masamune Shirow
Battlesuited cops, cyborgs and terrorists clash in a realistic cyberpunk future. I love my treasured old copy I have.

Metal Skin Panic Madox 01 (Animeigo)
An ordinaryJoe finds a secret battlesuit – now the military wants it back. This is worth watching for the power armour design. Recommended, though good luck finding a copy, but you can watch it here.

  1. Whence this art?

Reading list looks solid. I've read a little Appleseed; haven't watched the anime.

    1. The models I'm painting? Sorry, don't understand what you're asking. My IQ seems to have dropped...

    2. Guessing that SkilTao is asking about the art above the post? Without checking my copies, I guess it comes from the Dougram Comprehensive book, or maybe the Dougram/Votoms Design Works but I am sure out esteemed host will provide the specifics.

    3. What Mark said. Apologies for brevity.

PS, for any IT peeking in: google failed to notify me that my comment had been responded to.

    4. Ah, ha! Doh! Obvious on hindsight. As I said, my brain failed to connect the dots. As for image, not in any of the books, I found it on the internet, but can't remember where.

BTW there's a FB Fang of the Sun Dougram page: (https://www.facebook.com/groups/FangOfTheSunDougram)

  2. Have you come across Spitfire and the Troubleshooters? Short run Marvel comic strip, I first came across it as the second strip in the Transformers comic back in the ‘80s. Low tech experimental power armour.

    1. I haven't. I shall do a search for more info.

I've also got copies of Dynamo Joe, which I should've mentioned, and another Japanese manga series that I can't recall the name of that was very short lived.

  3. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm actually not familiar with most of them so they're welcome suggestions. Sorry I haven't been online as much so this comment is a bit late to the party.

    1. No need to apologize Mike. I've been running a through of trough of moroseness over the last month or so. It is what it is. Times are trying.

  4. Most of my early teens were spent borrowing manga from my rich friends. Like any 12 year old who loved Macross, Gunhed, Akira, and Venus Wars were huge favorites.

Venus Wars stood out for the semi realistic colonization of said planet with two great nations fighting it out with giant tanks vs the good guys who had a weaker but mobile military doctrine.

The special sauce of the series was a rag tag cadré who rode battle bikes. Basically 1-ton motorcycles that mounted a cannon powerful enough to disable most enemy MBTs when targeted at the rear or mobility components. Avoid the OVA, as usual they tried to cram volumes of manga into a single movie.

The designs of the military units have that late 90s technology vibe. No internet and mobile phones, but you get flashy cars, spiky hair, leather tights. The good old days.

Ill add your reads to my list too.

As usual, I love your painting photos and blow them on a separate browser tab so I can admire the details zoomed in.

    Be safe you two!

    1. Glad to bring some pleasure with my painting here. I'm not that good. Certainly wouldn't win the Golden Demon award, but it's the best I can achieve for the amount of time and effort I'm prepared to spend.

The bit I enjoy most is the making, and by making I mean converting, reposing, and customizing the miniatures to be one of a kind.

Thank you, and stay safe too.
