Heavy Gear Cobra One

I think I mentioned that I managed to find a RAFM Artillery Cobra, and it arrived today.  The box was incredibly tatty, but this is my first pristine out of the box Gear, and it's a beast.  Just look at the sprue!  They don't make them like that anymore.

So had to take a picture and post it.  And now I have five Southern Gears.

  1. That's one of the more rare ones (the sprue is a dead giveaway of the final two waves iirc). When I was doing my own searches, I couldn't find a single pic of the variant or mortar. Congrats again!

    1. Not trying to make you jealous, but this is a nice find. When I assemble it I shall think about how the mortar would look when deployed.

    2. I'm old(fart) enough to be able to simply be happy for the good fortune of others. Congrats as it is a nice find! I too am curious how it will look assembled. Have you thought about basing? With getting minis from so many different sources, will you be using or trying to use the metal hex bases or going with something more readily available and size appropriate? I'm still undecided myself on that subject. The big metal hex is a classic but it's also way too small with the gears' feet overhanging pretty much on every model to some degree.

    3. I've already chosen to go with metal 40mm x 2mm discs as can be seen here:

They're nice and thin, weighty and so far big enough.

  3. Gotta love the olde RAFM's! I have a few of the striders, too. They are Huge in this scale.

    1. Yes they are big. When I got my first Gear it was like the scene in Lord of the Rings where the Hobbits discover that beer comes in pints.
