The KickStarter 6th edition Ogre being the prime example of everything is bigger from Texas, and how bigger doesn't mean better or more profitable. As always this boils down to being Steve's baby and no one is allowed to control Steve's baby. All other considerations are secondary to the control of the IP. An Ogre, cast in metal has a base cost of approx £1.20 in metal. A Heavy tank about 30p. I do NOT understand the concept quoted about 'Cost of Production being prohibitive'. My business offered to cast the Ogre Miniatures for cost +10% and make new models and buildings and scenics and even offered the copyright to SJG free of charge - never heard any more.
So, I made my own Nihon and Chinese forces and scenery to go with them. One day, I might even mould them, but marketing could be a bit tricky...... However, having the moulds is different from having the rights to produce using those moulds. No matter what I think the only thing that matters is what Steve Jackson thinks, as it has been made quite clear that Ogre is his baby. He was pretty sure they were once produced by Ral Partha, so they may have been the original contractor. If so, Iron Wind may still have the molds - IW has molds for all the old RP lines.Dan Eastwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14105563883467108602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5262220849718806044.post-28821574825153631982014-03-24T14:41:51.874+00:002014-03-24T14:41:51.874+00:00Thanks for the link, and this is proof that you ca...Thanks for the link, and this is proof that you can have flexibility, quality, cheap; choose any two, to quote the old aphorism.

I'm hoping that the Richard who was casting these can be given the go ahead to do more, if only because I want to round out my collection and I have a list of miniatures that will come to a substantial dollar total.

And just for the record, neither do I have an insider information on this matter. I can see why fans get heated about this sort of thing, but I absolutely agree with you: the people at SJGames have thought of all these options.

The way I see it, there is a small number of truly rabid Ogre fans. Most of them are on the SJGames forum because, let's face it, if you're an Ogre fan it's pretty much where you need to be to find out about things. But ten, twenty, thirty guys who will buy minis at what they see as a reasonable price is not enough to pay for a casting run at a decent profit margin.

Plastic at the moment is poor quality, I agree. 3D printing metal isn't really there yet at a workable price, but that's the way I'd expect to see this going in the long term: a cast-on-demand service that doesn't require any dedicated stock beyond the 3D models, so thirty seconds later it can be making an entirely different mini. Whether that's done by SJGames themselves or something like drivethrurpg/shapeways, it's probably the future for low-demand minis. The alternative is no availability at all.

(Here's a 1:300 truck on Shapeways. I certainly wouldn't be inclined to pay three euros for that quality, not when I can get fourteen tanks for seventeen quid on eBay. Maybe if it were the exact vehicle I needed for a game… but I'm much more open to proxying than most gamers.)RogerBWhttp://blog.firedrake.org/noreply@blogger.com
